Gusto 101, located in Toronto's trendy Fashion District, was transformed from an abandoned, industrial auto body shop into fashionable Trattoria. OpenAire was approached to build a retractable roof for the stylish patio on the top of the old building. The owners wanted to create a patio with a retractable enclosure that opens up completely in a warm weather and fully closes in winter.
OpenAire designed a double slope, telescoping skylight measuring 32'-10"x 51'-0". It features an offset ridge with two upper gable ends. The roof has three divided sections, where two sections retract under one fixed section. The south wall consists of an 11'-6"x51'-0" sidewall which features a stacking door system which creates an opening of 4'-6"x32'-7". The east gable end measures 23'-4"x12'-5" which features a bi-folding door system which creates an opening of 4'-6"x23'-4". In warm weather, diners can enjoy their meals in the breeze and sunshine with the patio roof retracted and patio sides fully open. During winter months with the roof closed, guests can enjoy a cozy rooftop space, dining under the stars.
