Challenge: The Milford Orange YMCA faced a tough choice. They were about to undergo a major overhaul of their facilities and needed to incorporate a pool enclosure to replace their existing bubble. The bubble was at the end of its lifespan.
Outdoor swimming is very popular at the aquatics-focused YMCA. How could they maintain the outdoor swim experience while still providing a year-round swim program in an enclosure that would complement the new facilities?
“Our membership has tripled. The community loves the whole thing. They can’t believe we have this here in Milford.” “The OpenAire structure gave us what we were looking for. We just got through the winter and it was so neat to be inside the structure when it was snowing.”
Judy Jameson, Executive Director, Milford Orange YMCA

Solution: OpenAire offered the perfect solution – a striking building to match the new facilities, a maintenance-free structure (no more gloomy bubble), and the ability to open the roof and walls up to 50% to create a fresh-air swim experience.
The existing pool is Z-shaped and its proximity to the YMCA building demanded a large span structure capable of spanning over 100 feet. The offset ridge, high sidewalls, and ‘saw tooth’ footprint offer a unique look that works well with the sweeping curves of the adjacent facility.
“We were at approximately 4,000 members and had a target to 6,000 in two years. But by year end of 2005—what was that 7 months? - we were at 7,000. The reaction of the community was instant success. It blew well past our expected goals.” Phil Dwyer, President and CEO, Central Coast YMCA, New Haven, CT in Recreation Management, March 2007
“Overall impression. The structure is very attractive and bright. Stepping inside we experienced an almost tropical climate. We addressed several issues in questions to the assistant facilities manager and the Openaire representative. This enclosure seems ideal for the recreational part of our facility where bright light, warmth and comfort are a priority. One enthusiastic member told us she comes every day (a 20 minute drive) since the glass enclosure was built. In her words "it's like going on a vacation". Her kids never voluntarily leave the pool.” Visitor
