Challenge: Joe’s Restaurant was being relocated to an historic location on Boston’s famed Newbury Street, home to some of the city’s most exclusive shops and restaurants. The new site featured an existing glass greenhouse which the owners wanted to incorporate into the new design to create a unique dining experience for their customers. The owners had a vision of creating an outdoor atmosphere that would open the restaurant up to the neighbourhood in warm weather yet still be a beautiful, light-filled space in times of inclement weather.
Solution: OpenAire, keeping to historical specifications, designed an 80’ retractable glass roof with 120’ bi-folding glass doors. The roof is designed to automatically close with the first drop of rain giving Joe’s Restaurant the best of both worlds. Now, the restaurant enjoys a beautiful space that allows light and air to flow through in times of sunny weather and allows patrons to enjoy the historic neighbourhood even in the winter.
